-
- Jeff,
-
- I use the Outbacker as a portable antenna. The ball mount
- from a Hustler BM-1 bumper mount fits nicely over a
- one foot length of 1" PVC, pushed in the ground.
-
- Or, I use the above with a PVC 'H' stand as pictured
- in the May, 1994 QST article on constructing a small
- loop antenna, using 1" PVC. The PVC fits well enough
- to eliminate the need for glue. This allows construction
- with 2 ' lengths for easy packing.
-
- I use a 1/4 wavelenth counterpoise wire or ground radial.
- A length cut from 2" copper foil works best, but I also
- use 300 ohm twin lead shorted at the end, or other
- insulated wire. Watch for RF burn on the counterpoise!
- Tape the end of the wire or use the foil when others are
- not present.

- A>Was wondering if anyone knows the frequencies that the shuttle uses for

-
- There have been many requests for "where do I find the audio for the
- Shuttle" on the forum. As mentioned earlier, the Goddard Amateur Radio
- Club (Greenbelt, MD) re-transmits the audio on a number of HF
- frequencies, and a number of Amateur Radio repeaters throughout North
- America also place the Shuttle audio on their output. This system is
- called "NASA Select Audio", and is usually pulled from a satellite feed
- or other direct method. This service is available on non-DoD missions.
- On some launches a video feed is also available, which is then made
- available on some ATV (Amateur Television) repeaters.
-
- I have summarized those feeds that I know about below, I would
- encourage you to let me know of any additions or changes that you know
- about. Keep in mind the list will change as repeaters add or drop the
- audio. Also, the audio will be present only when there is activity,
- which is not constant, especially at night. At other times you will

- Well of course you realize Mike that we hams barrowed *all* of our

-
- When I started Coast Guard RM school in `76 I was so surprised that
- the maritime people were using ham prosigns: Q-sigs, CQ, 73, Phillips
- Code (TU, SU, ABT, HW, BK, BT,...), et cetera. I was quickly made to
- understand that all these originated on the maritime bands and that
- hams stole them. Even the dit-dit that many CW ops end their QSO
- with is a commercial tradition, and we were told to use it.
-
- The only things that are ham inventions are the dozen or so traffic
- handling Q-sigs that the ARRL invented.
